The London Transport ST Class Originally introduced by the London General Omnibus Company in early 1930, the ST class was based on the AEC Regent two-axle chassis designed by George Rackham, who had previously developed the similar Leyland Titan. These vehicles were a considerable advance on previous types and from the outset were fitted with pneumatic tyres and covered roofs, although initially Metropolitan police regulations did not permit the driver to be protected by a windscreen. London Transport went on to order thousands of developed and improved versions of the Regent in the form of STLs and RTs, but the ST class continued to give good service (extended by wartime exigencies) until the late '40s. After its formation in 1933 Regent chassis supplied to a number of other operators were ultimately included in London Transport's ST class. Some of these other STs had bodies of various origins, which did not particularly resemble the type constructed at Chiswick for the LGOC. By far the majority of STs carried the relatively standard LGOC form and the model is intended to represent these buses. There were, nevertheless, detail differences and the kit has been designed in such a way that at least some of these differences are catered for. In particular alternative bonnet sides are provided and the modeler is advised to consult photographs to determine which is appropriate. Variations in destination panel location can be accommodated by appropriate positioning of transfers. Construction of the model should be completely straightforward. Sequence of assembly is not critical except that the bonnet side should be fixed before the lower deck assembly is added to the body shell. The vehicles carried red or green liveries appropriate to their operating era. That is, base colour plus white window surrounds and a silver or, from about 1940 on, brown roof. A small number of buses were transferred to the Inter-station fleet and carried an attractive blue and cream livery with a black roof. A challenging modification for the advanced modeler would be the construction of a producer gas trailer and changes to the bonnet area to match.
