Leyland PS 1 Harrington Body 1948

Thomas Harrington commenced his business as a motor coach builder and automobile engineer in 1897 in Brighton.

He soon became known for quality products but the automobile body business was short-lived as car manufacturers began to develop their own bodywork.

Harringtons therefore turned their attentions to commercial vehicle bodies and for both goods and passengers.

The first PSV`s were charabancs mainly for local use but although production was curtailed during World War I, The business had become established.

One of the most important customers was Southdown Motor Services and the association between the two companies lasted for more than 50 years.

Many of the designs were developed jointly to reflect the operator’s high standard of comfort.

Harrington eventually ceased production in 1966.

The kit is based on a 1948 prototype the Leyland PS 1 half cab (without a dorsal fin).

Southdown had a fleet of 6 but only one (HUF 4) is identical to the kit.

The others had variations to suit Southdown requirements the main one being a full canopy.

Many other independent operators bought them including Grey Green and Surrey Motors.
