Kit 1400

1938 LEYLAND TS8 – HARRINGTON SINGLE DECK BODY – SOUTHDOWN “1400”
 

Southdown’s “1400” series, with locally built body by Thomas Harrington of Hove, is one of the classics of the late ‘30s single deck designs. There were eighty-six in all, numbered 1400 to 1485, built between 1935 and 1939, of which 1400-1429 were on Leyland TS7 and the remainder on Leyland TS8 chassis. These were delivered in a number of batches, with detail variations and the kit represents 1442 – 1471 (FCD 242-265 and FCD 366-371). 

Earlier batches had a sloping front bulkhead (1400-1423), folding roof and roof mounted luggage racks (1400-41) and side destination displays on both sides (1400-1429). The final 1939 “GCD” batch (1472-1485) had a longer cab, with the windscreen lined up to the dash and without the ‘bulge’ above the dash. 

Post-war modifications included plating over the windows in the rear quarter panels as well as panelling over the folding roof and removing the luggage container from those buses which had these features. The offside destination display was removed or painted over. 

Pre-war these buses had cream roofs, but this was painted dark green during the war and remained as the standard post-war livery. Cream was retained round the front and side destination displays, on the waist-rail and on the surround of the rear destination display.
