Daimler Fleetline CRG6 Park Royal 'Birmingham Jumbo' 1969

At the time of the formation of West Midlands PTE in 1969 Birmingham City Transport had 100 Daimler Fleetlines on order to the longer length of 33' and a new style of Park Royal two-door body.
The first few arrived before the WMPTE takeover and were used for tuition but did not enter passenger service. 3881-95 carried BCT rather than WMPTE blue but only the first two had the Birmingham coats of arms. The remainder had no fleetname but all had WMPTE legal addresses.
Only 99 of the Birmingham order were actually delivered as Daimler requested that one vehicle be exported to Johannesburg. A replacement chassis with Northern Counties body was added to a later order.
At the same time Wolverhampton Corporation had an outstanding order for 25 vehicles of the same chassis/body combination and the specification was revised to be as similar as possible.

Initial allocations were;

3881-3904 Yardley Wood, primarily for service 18.
3905-3966 Selly Oak
3967-3979 Acocks Green
3980-4004 Wolverhampton
331 Johannesburg

From 3935 onwards a simplified livery was introduced with black lining retained only to separate the khaki roof from the cream.
Two vehicles (3914 & 3947) soon had plain glass fitted in the front upper deck windows but the remainder retained the opening vents.
Withdrawals began in 1979 as structural problems in the 33' 2-door bodies had become apparent and large numbers of ex London Transport DMS vehicles had become available as cheap replacements. The last was withdrawn by WMPTE in 1982. Some saw further use including a number with Norfolk, Nayland.

Birmingham 'Jumbos' built 1969-70.

One vehicle is preserved at the Wythall Transport Museum.
