London Transport STL Lowbridge
The STL19 type lowbridge were introduced in 1942 and a total of 20 were built. They were 53 seaters and the only low-height double deckers built at Chiswick having the same general design with a sunken gangway on the offside. They had the normal number of seats (26) with six rows of four upstairs and one row of three upstairs. External the STL19 appeared to be built to normal peace-time standards but internally they were austere and although having upholstered seats they had a single skin body. The indicator boxes were reduced almost to a minimum with a single box in front and one side box over the platform with none on the rear. For operational flexibility they were mounted on the standard pre-selector chassis. In the early post war period the rear number plate was fitted in the conventional offside corner position. In 1952 STL19`s were withdrawn from route 410 and this saw the demise of the only two which carried other than the standard livery of red/green and white. STL 2148 had received a green/cream livery at Aldenham in 1949 and STL 2311 had appeared from Chiswick in modern all green livery in 1950. They were replaced by the RLH class which also had the reduced destination displays
Fleet & Reg No`s.
