The Prototype Replacement of the London Transport single deck fleet did not start until 1951.
The standard single decker was the AEC Regal IV which was launched in 1949. After
successful trials in 1950 with demonstrator UMP 227, an order was placed for 700 with Park
Royal bodies.
A change in regulation length to 30ft came
too late to affect the first twenty five which were built to 27`6" RF 1-25 (LUC
201-25) were intended for private hire, tours and London sightseeing and as a consequence
were fitted with roof observation windows, Green Line seats and a p.a. system.
The first RF`s were licensed in time for
the Festival of Britain in May 1951. All 25 coaches were allocated to the Central area at
Camberwell, Holloway, Middle Row, Riverside, Streatham, Willesden, Hammersmith and Upton
Park.
In 1956 RF 16-25 were transferred to Green
Line services and fitted with side route boards. They were withdrawn in 1962. The livery
was Lincoln green below waste level but including the folding doors and surrounding areas.
Above was flake grey and lining out including fleet names and numbers in red.
