DD42
The last Crossleys to be purchased by Manchester Corporation were 60 vehicles in the 2160-2219 series, delivered in 1949. By that time, Crossley had been taken over by AEC and the familiar Maltese Cross trademark had given way to the Crossley name on the radiator. The new owners decided to cease production of spares, thus curtailing the working life of many vehicles.
The last Manchester Corporation 8ft wide DD42/8 was withdrawn in 1968, ending over 40 years of Crossley operation in the city. By this time, the livery had become very simple with all-over red relieved only by a simple cream band. The curved bottom edges of the front windows are reminiscent of the flamboyant streamline design of some 30 years earlier.
