London Transport Leyland Cub (C Class) Leyland Motors Ltd introduced the Cub in 1931 as one of a range of light normal control chassis which were built at its Kingston upon Thames factory. It was powered by a new six cylinder 4.4 litre side valve petrol engine and was available in several wheelbases. The L.T. board inspected a Cub chassis in 1934 and in the same year bought one for evaluation. C 1 was a KP3 with a wheelbase of 15ft 6 in and with a 7ft 6in wide body enabled all 20 seats to face forward in the Chiswick built body. Evaluation was also carried out on Thornycroft and Dennis Dart chassis but by the time the board was ready to make a decision in 1935 Leyland had developed a new 4.4 litre oil engine. This no doubt influenced L T`s decision to make the Cub its standard one man bus. 96 production buses were owned. The first 74 for the Country area with metal framed bodies built by Short Bros of Rochester (C2 – C75 BXD 631 – BXD 700) and 22 with Weymann bodies (C77 -C98 CLE 105 – 126) for the Central Area. The latter were finished in a livery which included a black roof, a feature shared only with the 5Q5.
